The Direct Answer

Buy defense for the threat that repeatedly removes your ability to play, not for the word “spirit” on an opponent’s hero. First identify whether you are dying to a single ability, repeated area pressure, or the inability to leave after being hit. Then choose the available defensive option that answers that pattern while keeping your core job possible.

When This Works

Use this after two or more deaths show the same cause, or when a planned fight clearly revolves around one type of spell pressure. Check the current shop descriptions in your client because item names, costs, and effects can change. The spirit damage build guide covers the offensive side of the same decision.

When Not to Use

Do not buy a defensive item simply because the enemy deals some spirit damage. If you are dying before using your weapon, being isolated, or missing a retreat route, resistance alone may not solve the problem. Fix position and timing first.

A Purchase Process

  • Review the last deaths and name the first event that made escape impossible.
  • Decide whether the answer is durability, a way to break pressure, or time to reposition.
  • Read the shop description and compare the item with the job you still need to perform.
  • Buy the smallest useful response, then reassess after the next fight instead of committing to a full build blindly.

Threat Table

What keeps happeningFirst questionBetter response
One spell removes most of your healthCan you avoid its range or timing?Position first; add defense if the pattern remains
Area pressure denies your routeWhere can you stand and still contribute?Choose survivability or movement that preserves an exit
You survive the hit but cannot actWhat control or follow-up finishes you?Address the follow-up and enter with a teammate
You are safe but deal no useful damageIs defense delaying your actual job?Stop adding defense and restore your needed output

Common Mistakes

  • Buying from a memorized list without checking the current item text.
  • Calling every death “spirit damage” when the real cause was open positioning.
  • Purchasing multiple defensive pieces before testing one clear response.
  • Ignoring teammates who can change the same matchup through peel or focus.
