Hero Roles

Deadlock has no fixed role queue, but hero tags, weapon type, and complexity rating tell you how a hero wants to be played. Most heroes can flex between roles through item choices.

Reading the Hero Card

According to official deadlock.io, each hero card gives three key reads:

  • Tags: e.g., Abrams is Tank / Brawler, Haze is Assassin / Stealthy. They describe the hero's core fantasy and fighting style.
  • Weapon archetype: pistols and rapid-fire guns favor sustained close-to-mid trades; shotguns are point-blank brawl weapons; burst-fire and long-range weapons reward aim and positioning.
  • Complexity 1-4: 1 is forgiving, 4 is demanding. New players should start at 1-2.

Six Common Roles

🛡️ Frontliner / Tank

Soaks damage and holds space so teammates can deal damage. Examples: Abrams, Kelvin, Warden.

💪 Brawler / Duelist

Dives into the enemy team and sustains through the fight. Examples: Infernus, Lady Geist, Yamato.

🔫 Gun Carry

Scales through Weapon items and carries through gun damage. Examples: Haze, Vindicta, Wraith.

🔮 Spirit Carry

Scales through Spirit items and wins with ability burst or zone control. Examples: Seven, Pocket, Sinclair.

⚔️ Initiator

Starts fights with hooks, pulls, or dives. Examples: Bebop, Dynamo, Lash, Paradox.

🩹 Support

Heals, shields, and disrupts so carries can work. Examples: McGinnis, Ivy, Dynamo.

Beginner-Friendly Heroes

Based on SteamDB and official recommendations, these heroes are more forgiving for new players:

  • Abrams: self-heal plus charge, lets you survive mistakes.
  • Seven: lightning ball clears waves fast, ultimate brings huge teamfight value.
  • Infernus: damage-over-time fire kit, less aim-dependent.
  • Haze: a classic farm-and-carry pick for players who want to practice shooting.
  • Dynamo: great if you prefer enabling teammates; Singularity can decide fights.
